Radiofarmacia de Centroamérica S.A. signed an agreement with the City of Knowledge Foundation to develop a radio-pharmacy at the International Technopark of Panama in order to install the first laboratory production of radiopharmaceuticals for early detection of cancer.

Professor Jorge Arosemena, Executive Director of the City of Knowledge Foundation, expressed his enormous satisfaction of being able to count with the company’s wonderful team inside campus. For his part, Mr. Gines A. Sanchez Urrutia, Director of Radiofarmacia de Centroamérica, commented on the installation of the Cyclotron, a device for the production of radioisotope Fluorodeoxiglucosa (FDG), and a distribution network, as an innovative service for hospitals and clinics of the public or private sectors in Panama.

The manufacture of these inputs represents a major breakthrough for Panama in early cancer detection, as it would enable hospitals to acquire Positron Emission Tomography (PET). In this radio-pharmacy various radioisotopes will be produced through processes and synthesis of other isotopes in the Cyclotron, which are generated by the acceleration of particles from the different chemical elements selected.

Positron Emission Tomography is a noninvasive image technique for diagnostic and research “in-vivo”, capable of measuring the metabolic activity of the human body. The main tracer used is fluorine-18 together with the fluorodeoxiglucosa molecule (FDG), which allows the study of glucose metabolism, which is increased in tumor cells.

PET has proven useful in the diagnosis, staging, evaluation of recurrences and treatment, in a number of oncological diseases emphasizing mainly the lung, breast, esophageal, colon, thyroid, head and neck, melanoma and lymphoma. It has also meant a change in the clinical management of a significant number of patients by allowing a cost-efficient use, due to the fact that surgery and treatments to patients with very advanced disease can be avoided, facilitating the optimization of high cost therapies.

The installation of the radio-pharmacy at the City of Knowledge will prove an important diagnostic tool in our country and region.
