On Thursday, August 8, 2013, at the headquarters of the Organization of American States (OAS) located in the City of Knowledge, Panama, an agreement was signed between this institution and MarViva Foundation, aimed at identifying successful strategies for the protection of sharks, species recognized as indicators of ocean health in their capacity as top predators and whose fisheries are seriously challenged by overfishing worldwide.

The funds allocated to this initiative will be used to stimulate the exchange of experiences and knowledge in a workshop between international experts on strategies for the conservation of shark populations and government officials in the areas of environment and fisheries of Panama, Colombia and Costa Rica. Representatives of NGOs, research centers and the fishing community will also be invited to participate. The event will be held in Panama City in mid-October 2013.
