Celebration of the United Nations Day for South-South Cooperation 2014
As part of the celebration of United Nations Day for South-South and Triangular Cooperation, the United Nations System in Panama under the coordination of the UNDP, and sponsored by the City of Knowledge Foundation, conducted a discussion session in which the role of the UN in promoting South-South and Triangular Cooperation in the region was discussed.
The discussion session, held at the City of Knowledge Convention Center, was attended by ambassadors, agencies of the United Nations System and South-South Cooperation experts, who stressed the importance of South-South and Triangular Cooperation for assisting growth and equity in the South in an international context of transition of the Millennium Development Goals to the new Post 2015 Development Agenda, focused on shared prosperity and environmental sustainability.
Panelists included Jorge Arosemena, Executive President of the City of Knowledge Foundation, Freddy Justiniano, Director of the UNDP Regional Centre for Latin America and the Caribbean, Francisco Simplicio, of the United Nations Office for South-South Cooperation, Inés Brill, from the UNDP, María Celia Dopeso, from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Government of Panama, and Cesar Núñez, Director of UNAIDS for Latin America.
The speakers highlighted the commitment of the United Nations to promote South-South and Triangular Cooperation in the formulation and implementation of regional projects and programs, and urged the agencies of the United Nations System to achieve a greater coordination in their response to southern countries that will generate major advances in sustainable human development of countries in the region, as agreed under the principle of sovereignty and mutual benefit.
The participatory dynamic of the discussion allowed attendees to reflect in workshops on the best way for the UN to join the civil society and other actors to support South-South and Triangular Cooperation. They also discussed the role of the United Nations in enhancing the voices of southern countries in global debates and multi-regional spaces.
The United Nations Day for South-South Cooperation is a reminder that South-South Cooperation can help us cope with the shared goal of creating a more equitable and sustainable world.
