Communication strategy/planning and implementation consultant for Children on the Move proposal

Childhood in situations of migration and displacement in the Northern Triangle of Central America (El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras) to the United States has increased in the last few years. One of the elements that has characterized these recent times is a continuous growth in the number of unaccompanied children and adolescents (C&A) migrating, as well as an increase in migrant families with children, principally young women with their children.

The presence of children and adolescents has been a challenge for the authorities, due to the need to articulate and strengthen systems and mechanisms to attend to the special protection these groups need, in accordance with international human rights standards.

In 2014, when the humanitarian crisis of children in a situation of human mobility from the Northern Triangle of Central America (El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras) and Mexico towards the United States was declared, Save the Children for Latin America and the Caribbean developed a regional strategy to respond to this situation. The essential components of response to this crisis were the prevention of forced migration, addressing the causes such as violence, poverty and lack of access to food and basic services in populations at high risk of migration. Another component was Protection through the strengthening of national and local protection systems for children and adolescents throughout the migratory route, including detained and repatriated children and adolescents. And finally, the elaboration of an advocacy plan that would place the problems of children in a situation of human mobility on the national and regional political agenda.

Two years after of the Regional Strategy on Children on the Move for Latin America, we highlight the importance of developing different regional and national projects to respond to the situation of violence, lack of opportunities in the countries of origin and the protection needs of children and adolescents in the countries of the Northern Triangle.

Over the course of these two years, Save the Children has tried to make visible the situation of migrant children and adolescents to make known the difficulties that children and adolescents face throughout the migratory process, emphasizing the causes that cause migration and the reintegration to their communities at the time of return.

Within the framework of the regional strategy for migrant and displaced children, one of the objectives has been to promote the voices of migrant and displaced children and adolescents and contribute to the achievement of programmatic and advocacy objectives to confront the migratory crisis that affects Latin America. Therefore, the organization wants to continue to visualize the situation of migrant children and adolescents through the collection of information and the production of communication materials that serve for political advocacy and obtaining funds.
